EATING DISORDER TREATMENT
FOR ADOLESCENTS
Eating disorders can significantly impact an adolescent’s physical health, emotional wellbeing, and family relationships. I offer specialised eating disorder treatment for adolescents aged 16 years and older across Brisbane - younger adolescents may be considered on a case-by-case basis. My style of therapy is particularly suited to teenagers who may have previously engaged in Family-Based Therapy (FBT) without success, experienced partial recovery, or continue to struggle with eating behaviours, body image concerns, or emotional difficulties despite previous intervention. My approach is tailored to the developmental needs of older adolescents, recognising their growing independence while ensuring families remain appropriately supported throughout recovery.
I approach treatment in a collaborative way, and typically conduct individual sessions with the adolescent alongside sessions with parents and, where helpful, the family as a whole. Individual sessions provide a supportive space for teenagers to explore their experiences and develop practical strategies for managing eating challenges. Parent sessions focus on helping caregivers respond effectively and confidently to eating disorder behaviours, while family sessions aim to strengthen communication, increase shared understanding, and support a coordinated approach to recovery. This process helps adolescents feel supported while also ensuring parents feel informed, guided, and confident in their role.
This approach centres the adolescent, while helping them gradually build confidence and autonomy in managing their eating and overall wellbeing. Alongside supporting nutritional and behavioural stability, therapy explores underlying factors that may contribute to eating disorder difficulties, such as anxiety, perfectionism, emotional regulation challenges, identity development, and family or relationship dynamics. Treatment aims to support adolescents to develop a more flexible and positive relationship with food, strengthen self-esteem, and build sustainable skills for long-term recovery.
